Hillary Clinton remembers...

I must have been about eight years old when my mother’s mother took me and my brother Hugh to see The Wizard of Oz. We went downtown to one of Chicago’s grand old movie palaces on a Sunday afternoon. I’d never been in so majestic a theater before.

On our way there, my grandmother kept warning us that little children sometimes got kidnapped by strangers from city movie houses. When we reached our seats, she sat between us and looped her arms around my brother and me to protect us from harm, real and imagined.

The scenarios she conjured up were enough to give us goose bumps even before the movie started. By the time those weird-looking winged monkeys flew out of the witch’s castle and Dorothy and Toto were grabbed and taken away, kids were screaming and my brother was trying to climb under his seat to hide. I grabbed hold of my grandmother’s hand for comfort, only to discover that it was as clammy as mine. It was the first time I remember being thoroughly scared. ~Hillary Clinton

Based on her early memory, what will you say is Hillary Clinton’s worldview? (NOTE: Poll is now closed, with results listed below.)

1. Things aren’t what they seem. (6 votes - 37%)
2. Monkeys fly. (0 votes - 0%)
3. Life is dangerous. (2 votes - 12%)
4. Someone needs to be in charge.
(8 votes - 50%)

Please cast your ballot in the poll to the right. Thank you!

Like Annie, I voted for "someone needs to be in charge" because Hilary does that so well!

But there is nothing in Hilary's memory about her taking charge, and certainly her grandmother's fear showed her that "things aren't always what they seem."

I'm sticking with my first vote, though, because perhaps out of all the confusion of kidnapping threats and blue monkeys and a frightened grandma, Hilary may have felt the need to bring some order.

This comment is not about Hilary, it's about Rosie O'Donnell, but I don't know where else to post it.

Did anyone read in Parade Magazine this Sunday morning the article about what celebrities did with their first big paycheck? If you did, what do you think of Rosie's reply? Is this another banana bike story of "settling" or what?

"Life was hand-to-mouth in L.A. Then came Star Search, and I ended up winning $23,000. For me, that was like $10 million. I put the whole 23 grand in my pocket so I could keep feeling it, and I walked to the nearest Mazda dealership. Alone. The salesguy sold me a maroon stick shift. I didn't know how to drive that, but it didn't stop me. Neither did the fact that the car had no air-conditioning. I paid the sticker price, got the extra warranty and drove that sucker away."

I am so "with you" on this observation of Rosie. I thought the exact same thing as I read this morning's edition of PARADE!! Rosie settled for the standard shift, the color, the lack of A.C....to say nothing of the PRICE she paid!! Similar to the banana bike that "was not at all what I was looking for," what'll ya bet the car wasn't either? It would be interesting to know "the rest of the story." Actually, in a very real way...we do know:-).

How interesting! This second story about Rosie really seems to validate your analysis of her worldview.

Also, you said that in order not to "settle" one needs patience and emotional control. Rosie obviously was so EXCITED about having the money that she had no PATIENCE to look for a car that more suited her needs. So she settled. Cool!
